Grading

I read an article the other day about a school not allowing any student to receive a failing grade. Instead of getting an F they get an I (incomplete). They have extended time, etc. to turn late work in. I am kind of torn on this issue. I can see both sides. I am a big believer in RtI, but I also think the line has to be drawn somewhere. Your thoughts?

We are running into this problem at my school. Apparently the teachers agreed, as it is written in the grading handbook, that they would give the kids the grade they earned. Now, more than 9 weeks into the school year and it has come to light that teachers are giving 65's instead. We have teachers giving students 3 and 4 redo assignments to bring up grades....so that they DON'T have to do as many RTI's. In the long run, I don't think this is going to be in the best interest of the students. I am not saying that we shouldn't work towards mastery learning....but, how many times is enough? When do we say that something else is wrong and address that issue? As far as receiving an Incomplete? Doesn't that mean that we would have students of extreme varying ages graduating at different times? Does this also mean that we could see a increase in drop out rates as a result of receiving to many incompletes??? hmmmm...more to think about
