Grading

I read an article the other day about a school not allowing any student to receive a failing grade. Instead of getting an F they get an I (incomplete). They have extended time, etc. to turn late work in. I am kind of torn on this issue. I can see both sides. I am a big believer in RtI, but I also think the line has to be drawn somewhere. Your thoughts?

Leaders Fail

Bennis writes "Next-generation leaders will need to fail frequently. If leaders aren't failing enough, then they probably aren't stretching themselves enough." I'm not sure if I agree with the "frequently" part, but I do agree that failure can result in learning.

Global Village

Bennis says "Global leadership challenges include how to manage the inevitable cross-cultural differences that surface as employees with different cultural values and native tongues attempt to work closely together." Future leaders will need to know how to mesh with different cultures. Teaching 21st century skills like collaboration, communication, and relationship building will help the cause.

Design

Leaders today must be designers. Leaders have to be creative, think outside the box, and add meaning to this world. In education this means anything from the appearance of your school, types of programs your school offers to students, teachers, and parents, and even creating a bell schedule that maximizes learning.

The Ethical Mind

I think it's important for leaders to act responsibly, do things the right way, and to maintain good character. The world would be a better place if people would practice this way of living.

Symphony

I think it is important for leaders to see the big picture. As a teacher I practiced the Backward Design model. I determined what I wanted to accomplish then developed a plan to get there. It starts with a clear vision.

Work vs. Play

What needs to take place for students to view school as play and not work?

A Whole New Mind

I agree with Pink. I think the future does belong to those who are innovative and creative. You see it all the time in education. We need to remain on the cutting edge.

The Transnational Leader

As we talked about this book on Friday it made me think about what our educational system might look like in the future and what role I might play in it. Will the traditional setting be non-existent? How will it be more global? Lots of questions. The best thing about it is we (cohort 4) and the degree we will receive will put us right in middle of this transition, some of us leading the way. Any thoughts?
