The Ethical Mind

I think it's important for leaders to act responsibly, do things the right way, and to maintain good character. The world would be a better place if people would practice this way of living.

I have always believed that a leader should lead by example. I would never ask someone to do something that I would not do myself. I believe it not only goes back to ethical, moral and servant leadership. You are right though.....if everyone did this....the world would definitely be a better place.

Jason, I liked your comment. Just to add on, the "ethical mind" from Gardner's "Five Minds for the Future" relates well to Focus Question 3 part 3. As global leaders, how do we respect the intrinsic worth of all people? Gardner (2008) says someone with an ethical mind "tries to understand his or her role as a worker and his or her role as a citizen of a region, a nation, and the planet." Relating to Paradox 1,if we can understand and know our own roles and worth, then we can much more likely understand the roles and value of others.

I believe that when we lead with an Ethical Mind, we are giving people around us the opportunity to learn and grow in positive ways. I agree that if all people would think ethically, our world would be a better place. However, it is hard to imagine that world. A large portion of our society is lost. Some people act with anger and violence and lack moral values. It is so sad to see, but it is the truth! One day, we will live in such a place!

Leaders-acting responsibly, doing things the right way, and maintaining good character...this sounds like the golden rule. If everyone would practice being a great leader, I agree that the world would be a better place

Amen Jason! As a leader, I know this important -- servant leadership. It's what a pray every morning while starting my day. I want to be that leader that Jesus was -- kind, bold, compassionate, straight-talk. It's tough not to fall into the world of management and not leadership.

It appears to me that we have a great start here of ethical leaders. The children's choir song "Brighten the Corner Where You Are" would be a good motto for us. We are commissioned to be salt of the earth and light to the world.

Sounds like you have the same idea that Gardner does in our book- 5 Minds for the Future when states that his work is centered around ethics and meaning.

You are exactly right. Integrity is a characteristc that can be pruned, shaped, and improved if we are willing to work on it. Great leaders have moral integrity. Integrity molds example.
